Current areas of investigation involve the exploration of the crossover between drawing in painting, the role of spontaneity, gesture and free and controlled mark making. Research and gaining a practical comprehension of various ancient and contemporary materials, colour and historic colour palettes, and their use in a contemporary way is an ongoing project. As a Dublin based artist I show paintings in a number of Irish and UK art galleries. At the moment I'm enjoying working in oils on very large, primed, unstretched canvas -either working on the floor (as with the Aborigines, who inspired this line of work!)or with the canvas on the wall. Its fun and challenging working on such a big scale (2metres x 2.5metres on average). Please note that a number of paintings can only be viewed fully by clicking on the 'zoom' or 'review' buttons, so please do take the time to do this if you'd like to see the full image. Thank you for accessing this site, I hope that you enjoy viewing my paintings. First hand viewings can be arranged through the 'contact' page, or by emailing directly to smorshead@hotmail.com. (Projects now: Boyle Arts Festival 2010; PrettyVacantDublin, group show in empty shop space during August; The Guinness Gallery, Foxrock, ongoing).
